To measure for doors that fit you, you need to measure the opening. Think of the opening as “the hole you would have in the building if you were to completely remove the doors and the frame.” It’s important to measure the opening, not the frame or the door itself, as those can vary from one brand to another. To suit your requirements, you need to get the correct measurements for the opening. In the example below, the green lines show the measurements you need to take. The longer line is the height and the shorter one is the width.

Notice that the left side of the frame is a bit wider than the right side; this is because there were add-ons that were later covered with trim. However, we still measure the entire opening, as removing the door and frame would also remove the add-ons. It’s always best to measure in centimeters (cm).

Always ensure to write down the measurements. Avoid sharing photos of the tape measure alongside the item, as this does not effectively convey the sizes. Keep the tape measure straight for accuracy. Once you’ve recorded the measurements, you can use them to find the right item.
For example:
Suppose I measured my opening and found the dimensions to be 200 cm in height and 100 cm in width. I would then visit www.greendoors.co.uk, click on “SHOP,” and use these dimensions to filter my search.

Once you navigate to the shop category indicated by the blue arrow, use the filters on the left side, highlighted in the red frame, to narrow your search based on your specific measurements.
In the example below, after inputting my measurements into the ‘Max’ fields, I set the ‘Min’ fields to zero to broaden the search, allowing my fitter to adjust the opening to accommodate various sizes. Many customers choose doors slightly smaller than their opening and use additional materials to fill the gap—a technique a professional fitter can advise on. It’s common to adjust for doors that are up to 30 cm smaller than the actual measurements to accommodate fitting needs. This also opens up the possibility to brick up space for further customization and cost savings.
Therefore, once you’ve set your maximum size requirements, input a ‘Min’ value about 30 cm less than your actual opening to ensure a range of suitable options.

Remember, always describe the opening as if you are viewing the item from the outside. For example, if the handle is on the right, the door will swing left, and vice versa.
